Budgie Pets

Budgies make great pets. They don't eat much, they provide endless hours of entertainment, and most importantly, they're CHEEP!

Man's Best Friend

Compared to owning a dog, budgies are a clear winner. A dog can cost a few hundred dollars, and then you have to buy "papers" for it, including citizenship, social insurance numbers, Visa applications, etc. These can bring the price up to nearly a thousand. And then there's food to consider. I have to laugh when some of my friends spend hundreds of dollars a year on great big bags of freeze-dried chemically re-constituted extra-lean processed dog food. All together, I spend about $30 a year feeding my budgie.

But of course, cost means nothing where pets are concerned. I can hear you thinking, "But Steve! You can't pet a budgie, take it for walks, or teach it to shake paws." If you are, you're wrong. You can pet a budgie, although he wouldn't like it very much. You could probably take a budgie for a walk, if you trained it well enough (but I wouldn't recommend it!) And I have taught my budgie, Birdbrain, to shake claws.

Antics

Well, OK, maybe a dog does have some advantages. But all pets have unique talents. Budgies can talk. It's thrilling to come home from a hard day at work or school, and have your budgie greet you by cheerfully swearing at you. Also, it's fun to watch your bird do things. They're kind of funny looking, and this makes them (dare I say it?) cute. For hours at a time, they'll try to re-arrange their cage, cutely moving the food dish from one end to another. They might even spend half the day cutely trying to knock your fine China onto the floor.

But aside from all of that, owning a budgie carries as much responsibily as owning any other pet. You can find some information on taking care of your budgie in the Budgie Links section. Just be sure to watch what it uses its Visa card on.
